FABRICLAND AT 70 YEARS - A RICH PAST AND A BRIGHT FUTURE

In 1934, Philip and Ida Heyman opened Chain Decorators on Somerset Street in Plainfield and began a family-owned retail business that has spanned seventy years and three family generations. From Chain Decorators to Highway Mill End Shop in Green Brook to Fabricland on Route 22 in North Plainfield, this fabric and decorating business has changed with the times, but has always managed to retain its warm, service-oriented style that keeps its 100,000 loyal customers coming back.

Fabricland is one of the largest and most unique home decorating stores in New Jersey . Under the ownership of Bruce Heyman, Philip's grandson, the store continues to grow in new dimensions, expanding with the purchase four years ago of Nassaus Window Fashions in Paramus. Today, the company that boasts the "largest selection of window fashions and drapery hardware, decorator fabrics and trimmings in the state" continues its efforts to stay focused on Heyman's personal mission - to provide excellent, knowledgeable service to customers. The stores have very well-trained staffs -- many with more than 20 years experience -- which has helped to forge close bonds with their customers and with the community.

"What's also special about our stores is that we offer the consumer the combination of custom-made, ready-made and do-it-yourself home fashions," says Heyman. "Both stores are filled with a selection of more than 800 different styles of draperies, curtains, valances, scarves, shades and blinds in a wide assortment of color, pattern and texture. Our Hunter Douglas Window Fashions Gallery is among the largest in the state and we also carry a large selection of in-stock decorator fabrics by the yard , including designer names such as Ralph Lauren, Laura Ashley, Martha Stewart and many more. For those seeking custom window treatments as well as furniture upholstery, the stores' Shop at Home service provides free decorating consultations in your home or office with very experienced decorating professionals.

Fabricland and Nassaus both focus on product diversity and customer service -- offering free decorating and sewing classes, store tours and special group seminars. "There are an amazing number of customers who have been shopping at our stores for over 30 years, "said Heyman. "They all come back and bring their grown children who are buying their first homes I call it the 'mother/daughter' demographic. We see it all the time."

As family-owned and operated businesses, both Fabricland and Nassaus Window Fashions maintain a strong sense of community by filling the "niche" in providing both top-notch products and services in a friendly atmosphere.
